Editorial content. „James W. Dean‘s Film Reviews“ (...)

„Saw a few short ,takes´ of The Pilgrim, Charlie Chaplin´s

latest. Highly amusing.“ (...)

„Only part of Chaplin‘s new comedy, The Pilgrim, being

available for preview, I can give only a sketchy outline

of the story of the film, leaving comment on the motive of the

story until it has been seen in full.

A man comes out of an old swimming hole and

is surprised to find convict clothes where he had left his

ministerial garb. Chaplin is introduced later in the

preacher‘s clothes.

Arriving at a railroad station Chaplin meets an eloping

couple. They ask him to marry them. A policeman

comes up. Both the elopers the escaped convict flee.

Chaplin buys a ticket to another town. Upon

his arrival he finds a committee awaiting a new parson.

They receive him and he becomes pastor

of the church.

Later an ex-convict recognizes him and greets

him as an old college chum and stays with Chaplin. Then

the fun begins.“
