Screen Favorite Visits Salt Lake in Seeking to Avoid
Lawyers and Papers.
Registers as ,Charles Spencer‘ at Hotel Utah;
Divorce Suit Roots Privacy.
Charlie Chaplin, whose screen antics have brought
merriment to thousands of American motion picture
lovers, fled from Los Angeles, Calif., with the avowed purpose
of ,escaping newspaper men and tenacious lawyers,‘
only to be trapped and interviewed at his room at the Hotel
Utah last night.
The screen star declared he had been given very little
privacy since Mildred Harris Chaplin, his wife, brought suit
for divorce.
Mr. Chaplin has been in Salt Lake since Saturday afternoon.
At the Hotel Utah he registered as Charles Spencer.
This, he explained, is a perfectly legitimate name, which he used
before he made the screen name of Chaplin famous.
But the screen favorite was far too much of a sportsman
not to appreciate the humor of the situation when
he climbed out of bed in his green silk pajamas in answer
to a knock at the door and faced a reporter.“ (...)
