Hollywood Filmograph, Los Angeles, Cal., September 22, 1934.

Charles Chaplin. Accorded by press and public

to be the „Silent Napoleon“ of filmland, this famous funster

is preparing to make his most unique comedy,

which, we are told, will deal with a subject that is entirely new

to theatregoers and the industry.

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 13. – First whisperings of the new

Charlie Chaplin picture are reaching the waiting ears

of Hollywood. Charlie, who was so active in the Sinclair campaign,

is making a satire on the NRA. The temporary title is

„The Waif“ and, if we can believe Charlie‘s promise, his picture

will be in the theaters within six months.

You see, Mr. Chaplin has other plans. He expects to star

Paulette Goddard in a picture he will direct himself.

A sort of „Woman of Paris“ idea, the same as he did with Edna

Purviance years ago. And here is something. Of course

Hollywood has always believed that Mr. Chaplin and Miss

Goddard were married. The story now goes that they

obtained the license in London under Charlie‘s real name,

Spencer, and Miss Goddard under the name of Mrs.

Edgar James while the ceremony was performed at sea.

& CHAPLIN DENIES NEW FILM

      WILL SATIRIZE NRA

Charlie Chaplin would have it known he is strong

for the NRA and has no intention of satirizing the movement

in his newest film, now in production.

Mr. Chaplin said today he had noted paragraphs

in the press that his current production, known

only as „No. 5,“ was intended as a satire on the NRA.

„I wish to state there is no such purpose on

my part,“ Mr. Chaplin said. „May I be permitted to say, being

a great admirer of President Roosevelt and in entire

sympathy with his policies, my organization is run in compliance

with NRA rules. I am making a comedy picture with

no endeavor to comment or satirize on social or political

affairs.“
