Charlie‘s Got ‘Em Guessing
THE QUESTION IS, will or will not Charlie Chaplin
marry Paulette Goddard, with whom he‘s shown
here at Los Angeles tennis match? Charlie says nothing. But
he kissed her good-by when she left.

& Will She Be Next Mrs. Chaplin?
because he stayed up all night so as to be on hand to bid
„bon voyage“ to Paulette Goddard (above), who was
leaving Hollywood for New York, and kissed her a fond farewell
as she entered the plane that bore her away. Dame
Rumor hath it that Charlie Chaplin (inset) takes more than
a friendly interest in the platinum blonde actress.
In fact, it is whispered she may be the next Mrs. Chaplin. Miss
Goddard was formerly married to Edgar James, the
New York clubman, and is a former Ziegfeld Follies beauty.

& Movie Blonde Friendly with Charlie Chaplin
BY GEORGE SHAFFER.
(Chicago Tribune Press Service.)
Hollywood, Cal., Aug. 15. – It may not be serious, but it‘s
at least conspicuous, this sudden gush of friendship
between Charlie Chaplin and Paulette Goddard, of the white
spun silk hair.
Miss Goddard is the good looking young divorcée who
was first picked up by Hal Roach to use as a platinum
blonde consolation prize after Mr. Roach has generously agreed
to cancel his contract with Jean Harlow because Jean‘s
grandfather objected to the movies. Mr. Roach then had the
pleasure of sitting back and watching Jean ascend
as a film star two years later, which is something like kicking
aside the first nugget of gold on a mine that later
smelts out $1,000,000.
After Miss Goddard was cast in a couple of shorts
at Roach‘s, something interrupted her film career
until we next see her engaged as one of Dance Director Busby Berkeley‘s cuties to cavort in and out of pajamas
and silk bathing suits in Eddie Cantor‘s „Kid from Spain.“
This cavorting revealed that Miss Goddard
was a good actress and she was given a part in the Cantor
picture, while the studio watchmen stood around
and gasped at the big foreign automobile in which Paulette
drove to work.
Lately she has been appearing at parties, cafés, and day
and night outdoor gatherings as the girl companion
of Charlie Chaplin. Miss Goddard‘s previous career as an
actress included among other things an appearance
in one Ziegfeld show, and a limited appearance in one Selwyn
play.
–
That Cantor picture, with its 76 beautiful maids, has been
teeming with romance. For instance, there‘s not only
Paulette and Charlie, but there‘s Nancy Lyon and Harry Bannister;
there‘s Marian Sayre and a publisher‘s son, and
there‘s Toby Wing and Jack Oakie. Any of ‘em might end
up in marriages and nobody be surprised.

& In the Arena of Romance
It looked almost like rivalry for a few days between Sidney
Franklin, the bullfighter, and Charles Chaplin, the
comedian. Object – Paulette Goddard, platinum blonde.
However, the comedy king continues the ruling
favorite.
Also about Paulette – she is to turn into a dark-haired
beauty. That‘s the natural shade. And when she
does she plans to go to the South Seas to let the tresses
grow out their native color. Is she by any chance
going native?

„No wonder Charlie finds her attractive“
Editorial content. „Chatter in Hollywood: The spotlight at the
moment is turned on Paulette Goddard, who plays
a small part in The Kid from Spain, Eddie Cantor‘s picture.
Miss Goddard might have passed by unnoticed with
the scores of other pretty young women who where out on the
United Artists lot if Charlie Chaplin hadn‘t shown the
pretty little blonde such marked attention and taken her places.
There is no biographical data on Miss Goddard. She
seems as mysterious as Greta Garbo herself. Here are a few
notations: ,She drives to the studio in a Hispano-Suiza;
she wears lounging pajamas trimmed in blue fox on the set
and a pearl necklace with a diamond clasp – a large
diamond clasp. Her coiffure is as unusual as Lilyan Tashman‘s,
and was designed for her by Antoine of Paris.‘ No wonder
Charlie finds her attractive.“
Paulette Goddard is Chaplin‘s leading woman
in Modern Times.
