By GEORGE LEWIS
THE fury of the press these days is directed at Charles
Chaplin, a patient man who has often suffered the
slings and arrows of outraged columnists. So far as we have
been able to determine, Mr. Chaplin, in producing
his latest picture, has dared to take his time, a most
unprecedented affront from a funny little tailor
hand-sewing in a land where products of the plant come
made to order. (...)
THE Chaplin picture was to be released this Fall, and
at the risk of inviting the fury again, we announce
the final reel will be re-filmed. (E. V. Durling announced
the same thing, having stole the story from us.)
The picture was previewed to Boris Z. Shumiatsky, doyen
of the Soviet cinema, and he convinced Mr. Chaplin,
we are told, the picture should be changed. He contended
the humor had a „fearful accusation,“ revealing
the unemployed starving because of the capitalistic system.
Why a Communist should have an objection, we just
don‘t know. We thought the idea would be just the thing
Russia wanted, having read the Hearst newspapers.
THE very Shumiatsky we were talking about, by the way,
was the latest to deplore Hollywood‘s production
pace. Listening to him we imagined with awe the studios
bursting with driven energy.
