Should be an absolute scream

Editorial content. „Charlie Chaplin

      One-Man Movie Factory

      By Dan Thomas

Why they call the funny little guy a genius: All he did

on his latest picture was to finance it, write the

script, cast it, direct and star in it, write the musical score,

edit it, and even help design the sets

AS a result of two years‘ steady work – at least as steady

as he ever works – Charlie Chaplin‘s new film, Modern

Times, now is ready for the theatres.

In Hollywood parlance it‘s ,in the can.‘ All that

remains to be done is to make the necessary prints for theater

consumption.“ (...)

„For instance, in a cafe sequence Charlie does a song

in pantomime that should be an absolute scream if it‘s

half as funny on the screen as it was while they were shooting

it. The writer just happened to be on the set while that

scene was being filmed. Nobody but Chaplin could carry such

a scene. When you make an audience enjoy a song

it can‘t hear, you‘re really doing something. There is no

dialogue, by the way, in the entire picture.“ (...)

Also in Californian, Salinas, Cal., Nov. 9, 1935.

Modern Times world premiere will be in New York

Feb. 5, 1936 at the Rivoli Theatre.

Rivoli Theatre, Broadway at 49th Street, New York.
