CHARLIE CHAPLIN has a genius for arousing curiosity
about his moving picture productions before they
are released on the screen. About once every five years
a Chaplin comedy is presented.
Such secrecy is enforced on all those connected with
the making and handling of the product before the day
of its general release that an intense interest pervades the
moving picture world regarding the story and the style
of the picture.
Modern Times, Chaplin‘s first picture since 1931, when
City Lights was released, will have a gala premiere
at the Rivoli Theatre next Wednesday, Feb. 5. The public
has been on tenterhooks waiting for this release
since it was first announced ready for a public showing
last October. But until we see the great comedian‘s
work unreeled on the screen not much will be known about
it except, perhaps, that Chaplin will remain true to his
art as a pantomimist and take no part in the spoken dialogue
(if there is any dialogue in the picture), since one of the
earlier working titles of the film was The Mute.
Has Sociological Theme
There are plenty of rumors and speculations about the
production, and one of them is to the effect that this
is the famous comedian‘s most ambitious venture, for ‘tis
said that underneath the usual comic subtleties and
the broader slap-stick gags, a serious sociological purpose
