Charlie Chaplin by Katherine Stubergh, Stubergh Collection

& Charlie Chaplin is sure now of a niche in California

history. Between scenes of his new comedy, „ModernTimes,“

sculptress Katherine Stubergh made a life-sized

bust of the famous comedian for the Los Angeles Museum.

      By KATE CAMERON

CHARLIE CHAPLIN has a genius for arousing curiosity

about his moving picture productions before they

are released on the screen. About once every five years

a Chaplin comedy is presented.

Such secrecy is enforced on all those connected with

the making and handling of the product before the day

of its general release that an intense interest pervades the

moving picture world regarding the story and the style

of the picture.

City Lights was released, will have a gala premiere

at the Rivoli Theatre next Wednesday, Feb. 5. The public

has been on tenterhooks waiting for this release

since it was first announced ready for a public showing

last October. But until we see the great comedian‘s

work unreeled on the screen not much will be known about

it except, perhaps, that Chaplin will remain true to his

art as a pantomimist and take no part in the spoken dialogue

(if there is any dialogue in the picture), since one of the

earlier working titles of the film was The Mute.

      Has Sociological Theme

production, and one of them is to the effect that this

is the famous comedian‘s most ambitious venture, for ‘tis

said that underneath the usual comic subtleties and

the broader slap-stick gags, a serious sociological purpose

will be revealed.“ (...)
