„Stared at and pointed at as though I were a freak“

Editorial content. „The Theatre and Its People

      By Annie Oakley

      OUT IN Los Angeles and back in New York this

is regarded as the most important night of the

cinema year. Let us hope it will still be so regarded

following the premiere of Charlie Chaplin‘s

long-awaited picture, Modern Times.

                                  * * *

      NIGHT will be turned into day around Sid Grauman‘s

Chinese Theatre in the California metropolis and

in the vicinity of 49th street and Broadway, where stands

the Rivoli. Those two houses have been honored

with the first showings of the Chaplin film.

                                  * * *

      Mr. Chaplin has turned down all solicitations to attend

the Manhattan premiere. ,The last time I was in New

York,‘ he told reporters the other day, ,I had a terrible time

battling through the crowds that gathered wherever

I went. And while I don‘t think I am as well-known now as I was

then, I dread the thought of being stared at and pointed

at as though I were a freak. I will be very much happier staying

in Hollywood, waiting for the news of the film‘s success

or failure. I think and hope it will be the former.‘

                                  * * *

      THOUGH a rarely interviewed man, Mr. Chaplin recently

divulged how the idea and title of his film originated.“ (...)

      Modern Times world premiere is in New York Feb. 5, 1936

      at the Rivoli Theatre.

      Rivoli Theatre, Broadway at 49th Street, New York.
