      The already sadly depleted ranks of the theatrical

old-timers suffered another major loss with the

passing of Minnie Maddern Fiske, just as the playgoing pubic

was robbed of one of the glamorous figures of the

stage in whose artistry it always found rich compensation.

      THE passing of Minnie Maddern Fiske, within a twelve-month

of David Belasco, faces us with the fact that the traditional

glories of the stage are going, likely forever, with the supersedence

of the motion picture as the increasingly dominant medium

      „While Mrs. Fiske‘s direct impingement upon the

motion picture was not considerable, there are relations

interesting to recall. She was in truth the first artistic

person of authority to become articulate in recognition of the

abilities of Mr. Charles Chaplin, with a contribution

of appreciation and analysis published in ,Harper‘s Weekly‘
