Chaplin Kept His Head
Forgetting that Charles Spencer Chaplin is a British
subject, several young Japanese naval officers last year planned
an attempt on the comedian‘s life in the hope of precipitating
a war between Japan and the United States. This startling testimony
recently was brought out, and verified, in the trial of ten naval
officers for the assassination of Premier Tsuyoshi Inukai, May 15,

1932.Charlie was to have been the next on the list, but
somehow the boys never got around to it – probably because
the reception at which the Chaplin debacle was to have
occurred never took place. Anyhow, it‘s probably just as well,
for dear old Charlie would have been caught with
his legs crossed, drinking tea, as is the Japanese custom.

JEWISH FILMS

BERLIN, July 2. – The new Germany has banned Jewish
actors, directors and assistant directors from the motion
picture screen, promulgating a film law which stipulates that
thereafter only 100 per cent Aryan pictures are to be
classified as German productions.

Editorial content. „Germany Bans Jews and Foreign Players
Adolph Hitler is the most ignorant fool that ever
was given the rights to dictate the government of a country
in this modern age. His latest prank is the barring of all
Jews and foreign actors even taking a backhand slap at his own countrymen who has not set foot on German‘s soil for
a period of ten years, from appearing in pictures, he maintains
in the Los Angeles Examiner, July 3, 1933, a German
film is one Made in Germany by a German Company and only
employing persons of German origin.“ (...)
„The edict of the Nazi Government, placing a ban on all
motion pictures in which Jews have participated in any
way, is merely one more step in the previously announced
Hitler program to deprive the Jews in Germany of their
economic opportunities, according to Aaron Rich, chairman
of the press committee of the Los Angeles United
Jewish Appeal.“ (...)
„,It is deplorable,‘ added Mr. Rich, ,not only that such
an edict should be issued, but also that it should
come from a department of the government named ,The
Ministry of Popular Enlightenment,‘ and which seems
to employ every means to keep enlightenment from the people.
The new law with its implications of hate and persecution
is added confirmation of the urgent need of relief for the Jews
in Germany, which the United Jewish Appeal is actively
engaged in making possible.“
