& Gumbiner Named Manager of New Cinema Theater

Robert Gumbiner, brother of H. L. Gumbiner, owner of the

new Los Angeles Theater, will be resident manager

of the new cinema palace which will shortly open with Charlie

Chaplin in „City Lights.“

With his family Gumbiner arrived in the city recently from

Chicago, where he was active head of Gumbiner‘s

Theatrical Enterprises, a concern operating a number of theaters

in that city.

Other executives and department heads of the playhouse

are H. M. Rosenblum, Albert E. Short, director of music

and stage entertainment; Sam W. B. Cohn, director of publicity

and advertising.

It is anticipated that seats for the world premiere

of „City Lights“ will be placed on sale within a fortnight at a

temporary box office at the theater.

& Story, Acting And Music By „The“ Chaplin

Hollywood – Music, composed by Charles Spencer

Chaplin, musician as well as comedian, will be featured on the

sound track of the long-awaited silent „City Lights.“ His

compositions are being arranged by Arthur Johnson. Chaplin

is accomplished on at least ten different instruments.

The picture will not be previewed at any of the Southern

California houses. It will open in Los Angeles either

on January 16 or January 23. The delay is caused by the fact

the Los Angeles theatre, premiering with „City

Lights,“ will not be completed before either of the above

dates.

Chaplin will split 50-50 with the Gumbiners, owners

of the new house.

He has also leased the George M. Cohan theatre

on Broadway for a minimum of ten weeks, and will open between

February 2 and February 7 at $1 top. Following completion

of New York arrangements, Chaplin will go to London to lease

a house there.

This completed, and everything moving smoothly, he will

spend six months touring the world. As soon as the tour

is finished, he will think about making another picture. He has

as yet made no plans for it.

„Celebrities made their reservations for the first night“

Editorial content. „Celebrities Reserve Seats for Premiere

Although the sale of tickets for the gala premiere

of the new Los Angeles Theater, which is to be opened

early in January, has not started yet, hundreds

of reservations from all sections of Southern California

are pouring in, according to an announcement.

City Lights, Charlie Chaplin‘s newest film vehicle, which

was two years in production, will be given its world

premiere coincident with the opening of the Los Angeles,

and it was immediately following this announcement

that many of the screen‘s most noted celebrities made their

reservations for the first night. William Gibbs McAdoo,

who had his tickets set aside more than a month ago, is first

on the list.

The Los Angeles, which is owned and will be operated

by H. L. Gumbiner, will set a new criterion in theater beauty, luxury

and comfort, it is declared.“

The world premiere of City Lights takes place in Los Angeles

January 30, 1931 at the Los Angeles Theatre.

Los Angeles Theatre, 615 South Broadway (between

6th and 7th Streets), Los Angeles.
