& CHAPLIN AS OWN EXHIB
FOR HIS NEW PICTURE (...)
Charley Chaplin becomes an exhibitor of his own picture
with „City Lights,“ having taken the Cohan theatre,
New York, for a minimum of 12 weeks, starting the first week
in February. Wherever possible, Chaplin personally
will make similar arrangements as an exhibitor in the key
cities.
At the Cohan, „City Lights“ will grind $1 following a $10
premiere with Chaplin on hand for the opening.
Chaplin has set the record quota of $6,000,000 on his
„City Lights.“ This is just the States and not the entire
world. U. A. exchanges have been advised to close contracts
on this basis. This means that the film as ordered
will be offered nowhere under 50% of the gross, and that‘s
strictly percentage.
In starting after business U. A. thus reverses its plan
of last summer. This was to hold off selling „City Lights“ until
after the film has opened on the coast or in the east.
All former contracts for the picture have been cancelled
automatically, since they were made under the old
standard agreement around two years ago.
U. A.‘s previous plans for holding off on selling plans was
on the contention that Chaplin‘s quota was too high.
With the film scheduled to open soon, U. A. is said to be
recalling all the old Chaplins from the market, aside
from one-reelers and others controlled by outsiders. It is
expected, however, that these may immediately
break out after „Lights“ opens.

„A ,fabulous‘ sum has been offered“
Editorial content. „The Highest Bidder?
One of the most interesting deals in Chicago film and
theatre history is now pending between United Artists
exchange and one of the smallest theatres in the city. The
deal involves the Chicago first-run of Chaplin‘s
City Lights, for which, according to the description of a U. A.
representative, a ,fabulous‘ sum has been offered
by the owner of the tiny house. It is understood that the
amount is a $50,000 guarantee, and percentage.
So tempting has the offer proved to United Artists
that no decision has been made to date, although
the subject was first broached about one month ago.“ (...)
„A decision is expected before the first of the year.
