Charlie was hit some dire blows a few years ago, when Lita
Grey Chaplin and the government both laid siege
at once to his treasury. (...)
The experience turned the comedian‘s hair gray,
and made him go back to work with a vengeance on his picture
„The Circus.“ He declared at the time that he had to. (...)
However, anybody that pays $1,600,000 extra income
tax can safely be said to have plenty of money. It is
generally considered to mean an income six or seven times
greater, allowing for the surtax. And Chaplin hasn‘t
spent all of that!

No fortnight in the history of Cinemaland has been
so replete with brilliant social functions as the current one.
Outstanding among them all was the world
premiere Friday night of Charles Chaplin‘s new picture,
City Lights. It was a historical event in the theatrical
life of Los Angeles.
The entire colony appeared en masse to honor their
fellow-worker. Handsome men in dinner clothes and
beautiful women clad in ermine, sables, gleaming satins
and sparkling with jewels graced the white way:“
The world premiere of City Lights takes place in Los Angeles
January 30, 1931 at the Los Angeles Theatre.

City Lights opens in New York February 6, 1931
at the Cohan Theatre.
