Chaplin in „City Lights“

Cugat‘s remarkable caricature of Charlie Chaplin

expresses the comedian‘s role in „City Lights,“

„The Chaplin-demanded terms“

Editorial content. „Publix Fears to Set Dangerous

      For Chaplin Silent

                                                              Chicago, Feb. 3.

It looks like Publix will not be able to get together with

Chaplin for City Lights, with Chaplin already signifying

his choice for independent spots throughout the midwest.

In Chicago it is likely the picture will go into the

Woods on a straight 50-50 split, the Chaplin-demanded

terms.

Publix is plenty anxious to have the picture for its loop

run here, but is afraid to give Chaplin the extra 10

per cent he demands. Publix fears if, acceding to Chaplin‘s

demands, Sam Goldwyn, Pickford and Fairbanks will

make similar terms for their films.“

City Lights opens in Chicago March 11, 1931

not at the Woods, but at the United Artists Theatre.

United Artists Theatre, 45 West Randolph Street, Chicago.

The world premiere of City Lights takes place

in Los Angeles January 30, 1931 at the Los Angeles Theatre.

      Los Angeles Theatre, 615 South

Broadway (between 6th and 7th Streets), Los Angeles.

City Lights opens in New York

February 6, 1931 at the Cohan Theatre.

George M. Cohan Theatre, 1482 Broadway (between

42nd and 43rd Streets), New York.
