& CHARLIE CHAPLIN LOOKS AT WENDT

We read, under date of the 17th inst., in the Art Institute

news letter, published in Chicago, that a well-known

picture actor visited the Art Institute, Monday, lured into its

galleries through his love of art.

Charlie Chaplin, unrecognized at the door, wandered

into the building and walked around unmolested

viewing the various exhibits. He paused in front of Taft‘s

beautiful marble group „Solitude of the Soul“ and

admired it greatly, saying afterward, „That‘s a statue I would

like to go back,“ and he visited it a second time.

Passing up the grand staircase toward the old masters‘

room he was recognized by a former instructor

in the institute, who showed him some of the paintings

in the galleries.

„He is one of the most modest and unassuming men

I have ever met,“ said the instructor afterward. „And

he knows good art. He commended the portrait of Marquis

Spinola, by Rubens, admired greatly the „Nymph

and Bathers,“ by Cort in the Kimball room, fell in love with

„Waterloo Bridge“ and other Monets in the Ryerson

loan collection, and expressed pleasure with the mountain

painting by William Wendt in the De Wolf gallery.

He stopped in front of the Gauguin and asked why such

a painting of human figures was called art. On calling

his attention to the fine color harmony and design in the picture

he readily agreed.“

Before leaving Mr. Chaplin penned a note of appreciation

to Lorado Taft for the marble group „Solitude of the Soul.“

„Will be void of any extreme pathos or tragedy“

Editorial content. „CHAPLIN‘S NEXT

      TO BE ,THE CIRCUS‘

Coming soon! Charlie Chaplin in the Bingham and

Bangham Circus!

The Chaplin studios in Hollywood now look like the

permanent quarters for a big circus.

This circus story conceived by Charlie is woven around

ludicrous situations. While it may contain some

whimsical ingredients and a dash of love interest, the story

will be void of any extreme pathos or tragedy.

In no way will The Circus resemble the story of The Clown

of which previous comment has been made. And

although the action will centre around the ,big-tops,‘ Charlie

will not appear in the usual garb of the circus funny

men but in his own particular habiliments of old; the baggy

pants, trick hat and cane, mammouth shoes and

minute moustache.

The Chaplin studio staff includes Harry Crocker of San

Francisco and Milt Gross, the humorist.

Georgia Hale will be the girl in The Circus, in the role

of a dancer and equestrienne.“

Merna Kennedy will be the girl in The Circus, in the role

      of a dancer and equestrienne.
