CHAPLIN IN THE CAGE OF A LION – „THE CIRCUS“

All kinds of shows and show people seem to be popular

with motion picture now, and Chaplin has fallen into

line with „The Circus.“ As usual, the idea has its own drawbacks,

especially when one has to pose in the lion‘s cage

with the lion and have a famous lion trainer stand outside

      and laugh.

„This combine deal has made me nervous“

Editorial content. „CHAPLIN HITS NEW COMBINE

      Comedian Against ,Submergence‘ of United Artists;

      Splits With Fairbanks Over Proposal

Designating himself as ,a kicker by nature‘ and characterizing

Douglas Fairbanks as ,a jumper,‘ Charlie Chaplin

yesterday granted an interview in which he declared that

,under no circumstances conceivable‘ would he join

the proposed releasing combine between United Artists

and Metro-Goldwyn.“ (...)

„Chaplin also stated that his attorney, Nathan Burkan,

will remain in Los Angeles several weeks until the entire matter

is settled.

      ,STRUTS‘ NEW STUFF

The comedian gave the interview in his studio office.

He was clad in athletic guise wearing  gymnasium

shoes and a sweat shirt. As he talked, he leaned over his desk

and performed eccentric dance steps. Later he escorted

the reporters to a back lot, and showed them a hitherto unknown

Charlie Chaplin – the tight-rope walker. On a wire stretched

twenty feet above the ground Charlie ,did this stuff,‘ illustrating

a number of steps and balances he is rehearsing for use

in his next picture, The Circus. In the midst of the performance,

after amazing the newspaper men with his proficiency,

the comedian lost his balance and came tumbling to the ground.

,Not so good,‘ he remarked. ,This combine deal

has made me nervous.‘“
