„Verging on collapse“

Editorial content. „Chaplin‘s Mother Dead;

      Ill One Month

      Noted Comedian Was At Bedside

      When End Came at Noon

CAME TO AMERICA IN SEARCH OF HEALTH

      Heavy Bond Posted for Woman

      When Time Allowance Overstayed

Failing to rally from a serious illness which attacked her

one month ago, Mrs. Hannah Chaplin, mother of the

famous Charles and Syd Chaplin, film comedians, died in the

Physicians‘ and Surgeons‘ Hospital, Glendale, shortly

after 12 o‘clock today.

Charles Chaplin and Mrs. Alfred Reeves, wife of the

manager of the Chaplin studios and a lifelong friend

of Mrs. Chaplin, were at the bedside when the end came.

Although his mother‘s death had been momentarily

expected throughout the night, Chaplin was verging on

collapse when attending physicians pronounced

Mrs. Chaplin dead.

Death, the doctors said, was due to a serious internal

disorder.

      HER STAGE CAREER

Born in London, where she was destined to become

a famous stage star, Mrs. Chaplin early began

a professional career. She eventually reached the height

of her career when she started in a number of the

Gilbert and Sullivan light operas.

Mrs. Chaplin was still a well known stage celebrity in Britain

up to, and including, the period of the World War.

It was at this time, however, tragedy overcame her when

she developed a mental derangement following

a particularly intensive air raid by German Zeppelins.

      TO BE BURIED HERE

Several months ago, while Mrs. Chaplin was living

on Syd Chaplin‘s ranch in the country, the federal

government declared she had overstayed her permission

to visit in this country and would have to return

to England. Both her sons then filed affidavits that their mother‘s

condition was slowly improving and were allowed

to maintain her in California after posting a heavy bond.

This bond was still in effect when death

overtook her.

Funeral arrangements for the woman, who was 65 at the

time of her death, have not yet been completed, but

it is expected she will be laid to rest in California, friends of the

grief-stricken comedian said.“
