CHARLES AT BEDSIDE
Mrs. Chaplin died at noon yesterday at the Physicians‘ and
Surgeons‘ Hospital in Glendale, where she was taken
little more than a month ago, after being stricken with a serious
internal disorder. Charles was at her bedside when
death came.
On Sunday and Monday Mrs. Chaplin rallied when her son
visited her at the hospital and it was then believed that
she had passed the crisis of her illness. Chaplin, however, was
summoned hurriedly to her bedside yesterday morning,
and she died three hours later. Friends of Chaplin say the comedian
is prostrated with grief over his mother‘s death and on the
verge of collapse at his home.
Sydney Chaplin is in a small town in France outside of Paris
working for an English picture company and he was
notified by cable of his mother‘s death. He and Charlie are
the only surviving relatives of Mrs. Chaplin.
CAME FROM ENGLAND
Mrs. Chaplin came to this country seven years ago from
England to reside with her sons. On her arrival in this
country she was suffering from a mental disorder due to shock
suffered during air raids on London. Each year her
condition has improved and the Federal government made
special provision for her to remain in this country.
Charles and Sydney were allowed to keep her here by
posting bond and it was only two weeks ago that
the government renewed the permit.
Mrs. Chaplin was born in London and when young began
a career on the stage, appearing on the continent under
the name of Lily Harley with the Gilbert and Sullivan light operas,
being well known on the British stage. She gave up her
career when her children were born. her husband was Charles Spencer Chaplin, Sr., well-known as an actor. He died
thirty years ago.
When his mother came to this country Charles built
a home for her in the San Fernando Valley near Lankershim,
where she had always lived.“
