& Just Charlie‘s Best Girl

Photo. Rumor has it that Paulette Goddard, platinum haired

film beauty, is Charlie Chaplin‘s best girl. Her reply to all

questions concerning Charlie is, „Why should I think of marriage

now, when I‘m on a marital vacation.“ She is shown here,

leaving the plane at Grand Central Airport on her arrival at Hollywood,

from New York.

„Then will set sail for Tahiti“

Editorial content. „PAULETTE SAYS

      RUMOR ,RIDICULOUS‘

      Miss Goddard So Terms Chaplin Betrothal Tale;

      Hollywood Unconvinced

      ,Ridiculous!‘

Paulette Goddard, platinum-blonde film actress, last

night thus denied the report that has had Hollywood

agog of late – to wit: That she is the betrothed of Charlie Chaplin.

She spoke her mind as she stepped from a Transcontinental-

Western plane at Grand Central Airport, following a hurried trip to

New York.

And by doing, Miss Goddard also – perhaps unwittingly –

let a cat out of her bag, which Hollywood hat not known was in

there.

,Why should I think of marriage right now,‘ she asked,

,when I‘m on a marital vacation?‘ She then ,owned

up‘ that she recently was divorced from Edgar James Goddard,

president of the Southern States Lumber Company

of Asheville, N. C.

Just before she boarded a New York-bound plane two

weeks ago, Miss Goddard found herself on the

receiving end of a fervent kiss from Chaplin; and that,

Hollywood decided, meant an impending wedding.

,She can be going to New York for only one thing,‘

was the consensus over cafe tables. ,She‘s going to fill up her

hope chest, of course!‘

But last night the girl with the spun-gold tresses declared

she had gone to visit her parents and while in New York

she had ,done some shopping.‘ And it wasn‘t trousseau shopping,

she insisted.

Miss Goddard‘s denial, however, will fail upon deaf

ears, those ,in the know‘ predicted; for Hollywood will continue

to believe that that kiss was the give-away of a betrothal.

Although Chaplin was not at the airport to greet Miss Goddard

he kept the telephone wires hot during the day with

requests for information on the airplane‘s westward progress,

airport attendants said. And his limousine was there

to swallow her up and whisk her away when she alighted.

Before disappearing into the cushioned precincts

the actress said she intends to remain in Hollywood only three

or four weeks, then will set sail for Tahiti.“

Paulette Goddard is Chaplin‘s leading woman

      in Modern Times.
