      Friend of Chaplin

Hollywood, Cal., Oct. 11. – (Special.) Paulette Goddard,

Charlie Chaplin‘s much mentioned new girl friend,

today was sued for $1,072 asserted due as back rent on the

New York apartment house which she quit last January

to come west, crash the movies, and go places with Charlie

Chaplin. The suit alleges that she agreed to pay $4,200

yearly rent for a suite in Lowell apartments, 28 East Sixty-third

street, New York. Miss Goddard filed an answer to the

New York charges denying knowledge of the asserted contract

for one year‘s lease, and also setting forth the defense

that she was and still is a minor. She was a show girl in New York.“

Paulette Goddard is Chaplin‘s leading woman

      in Modern Times.
