Candid Camera Catches The Melody Lingers On
Opening at Rivoli, New York
– 8:45 A. M. The first hardy customers camp
in front of box-office. They must have read our newspaper
ads which started off, „Be among the first to see...“
– 9:45 A. M. Ticket sale progressing at fast pace. More than 400
admissions sold since doors opened.
– 12:45 P. M. 15 minutes before the price change...
from subways, street cars and around the corner
customers race to get in line for The Melody Lingers On
– 5:30 P. M. And still the crowds come.
Already word-of-mouth comment establishes the success
of Broadway‘s newest hit.

„Chaplin typifies the motion picture more than any other star“
Editorial content. „Along the Rialto
with Phil M. Daly
SO CHARLIE is back after almost five years...... five long
years a.w.o.l. from the Screen...... we say ,without
leave,‘ for the world certainly has been waiting patiently
for the truant to return...... and the absence of Charles Chaplin
from the medium of shadowed pantomime that no other
comedy artist has even approached taking the honors away
from him was certainly not condoned by his world
public......“ (...)
„OH, YES... in case you have overlooked it...
Mister Chaplin‘s Modern Times opens for its world premiere
at the Rivoli tonite... it won‘t do any good if you are
figuring on getting inside the gate at this late date... the house
was sold out weeks ago... it‘s what you call
An Opening...“ (...) „and if Charlie lives to be 100 years,
we predict they will hold an anniversary featuring
his initials ,C.C.‘... A Century In Celluloid... ,From Birth of Films
to Modern Times‘... THAT should have been
the keynote of all the current ballyhoo celebration... for Chaplin
typifies the motion picture more than any other star
the industry has known... for he has lasted LONGER than any
of ‘em... what better line of ballyhoo could you get
for any picture?...“
a.w.o.l., absent without (office) leave.
