Autograph Hunter Collects One On Jaw

NEW YORK – The premiere of Charlie Chaplin‘s new

picture here brought out the celebrities, and the

celebrities brought out these autograph hunters. The latter

became a trifle unruly and required police attention

to soothe them. The youth at left collected a thump on the jaw

during the evening.

„He sang in an original Esperanto“

Editorial content. „Crush Greets N. Y. Premiere

      of Chaplin Film

New York, Feb. 5. – (AP) – For the first time, Charlie

Chaplin opened his mouth and made noises on the

screen tonight and crowds of tailcoated men and ermine

wrapped women were there for the startling event.

The occasion was a gala premiere of Chaplin‘s first picture

since 1931, Modern Times, at the Rivoli theater.

In the glare of lights on Broadway outside thousands

pressed to stare at celebrities, seek their autographs,

and even feel the texture of the evening gowns as the notables

were escorted from their machines into the foyer.

A police emergency call was sounded and squads

of patrolmen pushed the crowds back for two blocks.

Some of the notables were badly disarrayed when they

gained their $5.50 seats.“ (...)

„The high point of the film, at least that which received

the biggest build-up and was drawn out to a pin point

of intensity, was the scene in which Chapin sang a few ditties.

Even then he made no complete surrender to the

,talkies.‘ He sang in an original Esperanto. Outside of that

he made no noises at all.

      –

The audience saw again the old Chaplin trick of

careening around corners like a sloop in a stiff wind, his wistful

smile and mock ballet dancing.

One of the biggest laugh-getters was a scene in which Chaplin

was fed by machinery which did not work very well.“

Modern Times world premiere is in New York Feb. 5, 1936

      at the Rivoli Theatre.

Rivoli Theatre, Broadway at 49th Street, New York.
