„Chaplin at his height, which is very high indeed“
Editorial content. „Insiders‘ Outlook
By Red Kann
SECOND day thoughts on Modern Times: There
is, as, of course, expected, a tremendous interest in Charlie
Chaplin‘s first feature in five years.“ (...)
„Many are the places where Chaplin, relegating direct comedy
business into the background, makes scenes notable through
his ability in pantomime. One of the most delightful occurs in the
cafe where a cuff carrying the lyrics of his song flies to the
wall and Charlie is compelled to bluff his way through with jumbled
lyrics in his own Esperanto. His interwinding of jargon,
funny little dance steps and story planting through gestures
is a gem of its kind and Chaplin at his height, which is
very high indeed.“
Modern Times world premiere is in New York Feb. 5, 1936
at the Rivoli Theatre.
