Modern Times Clippings 292/382

Sidney Skolsky, Daily News, New York, Feb. 15, 1936.

WHEN Chaplin‘s latest opus opened in Hollywood –

at $5 a head, incidentally – the comedian himself and his

leading lady were among the early arrivals at the

theater. Here they are, passing the velvet ropes into the lobby

and apparently pleased with the evening‘s prospects.

      Chaplin vs. „Modern Times“

                                                         Hollywood, Feb. 14.

THE GALA Hollywood movie premiere now belongs to New

York. The Metropolitan City appears to go for it bigger

than the movie town. Certainly, from the photographs published,

there was a larger crowd gathered outside the Rivoli Theatre

than the one which massed for the opening at Grauman‘s Chinese

Theatre. And from the news reports, there was rioting

on the New York sidewalks, while in front of the Chinese,

the only commotion was made by the celebrities.

It was a big evening for the picture people; actors, directors

and executives. They came to honor Chaplin and see his

work. As the man who broadcast the affair over the radio said:

,This is the first Charlie Chaplin picture in five years,

Charlie‘s first since he gave us City Streets,‘ Such is fame,

Chaplin‘s own town gathers to pay homage and they

can‘t name his last picture correctly,

They gathered in Grauman‘s forecourt, the supreme justices

of Hollywood, to render a verdict on Charlie Chaplin.

Chaplin of the silent flickers represents the Old Deal. Is the

Old Deal constitutional? The Hollywood Supreme

Court was to review the case.“ (...)

„The funniest remark of the evening was made by

Groucho Marx who said: ,I came here to see another comedian

who doesn‘t talk.‘“

      Also in Evening Citizen-News, Hollywood, L. A.,

      Cal., Feb. 14, 1936.

The title of Chaplin‘s last film is City Lights,

      not City Streets.
