film critic. He succeeds Francis Birrell in the fall.
Cooke has written a lot for English papers about Hollywood
where he recently worked on the script for Chaplin‘s
new film. Appointment, in effect, carries sole rights to radio
criticism of films, B. B. C. having a monopoly
of the British air.

„While Paulette and Charlie cultivate sphinx-like smiles“
Editorial content. „CHAPLIN MARRIAGE
SPECULATION
The persistent rumor that Charlie Chaplin and Paulette
Goddard are married is now adorned with the
information that they were married at sea beyond the
twelve-mile limit and that the union was
registered in Great Britain.
As, however, Charlie‘s boat flies the American flag and
maritime law calls for registration at the next American
port of call, that rather spoils the story. The British Consulate
tells me that, had it been an English ship, the skipper
would promptly have to notify Somerset House in London
from the first English port he touched.
So we shall just have to go right on guessing, while
Paulette and Charlie cultivate sphinx-like smiles.“
