      „The Circus.“

                                                London, Monday.

It does not matter how far or how fast the picturegoer

may travel in his search for enjoyment, how widely

his admiration may range, how surely his judgments may

mature; at the beginning and end of the course

stands Chaplin, and the little figure in the sorry boots and the

jubilant hat who first set him off as an explorer of the

screen will be the one man left to shake him by the hand

when the years have brought him home again

from adventure. (...)

The new Chaplin picture „The Circus,“ which begins

its English run in London to-day, is as good as any

he has made for the novice and better than most for the

adept. These tragi-comic adventures of a tramp

chased by a policeman into a traveling circus are rich

with good, broad laughter, packed  with good

sense and nonsense and all the jolly catastrophes

that children love. (...)

But happily Chaplin the director has had the wisdom

to frame „The Circus“ chiefly and to pull it together

with a final, splendid gesture as an arena for the antics

of Charlie the mime. (...)                          C. A. L.
